How do I Transfer into the LAES Program?
Students who are currently enrolled in other degree progams and want to enroll in LAES need to apply to transfer into the program (.doc). Students cannot double major in LAES and Engineering, but may be able to with some of the other degree programs. Once students are accepted into LAES, they immediately begin planning their degree program based on their individual interests and consultation with the Program Directors. To begin the transfer process, consult the below steps:
Step 1 - Review the Entrance Criteria
Students applying for admission into the major must:
- be in good academic standing, which means you are not on academic probation, and have a minimum 2.0 GPA in the current term, cumulative Cal Poly and cumulative Higher Education;
- have a minimum GPA of 2.0 (2.5 preferred) in at least 3 math classes required in the program; at least one of those Math classes must be at the 200-level;
- have completed Area A with at least a 2.0 GPA (2.5 preferred) or have the equivalent of credit in at least 3 lower division GE classes in Areas A, C, or D and a minimum 2.0 GPA (2.5 preferred) in those classes;
- submit a one-page essay describing one's interest in the program and any applicable experience.
In order to continue in the program, students must remain in good academic standing and be making sufficient progress in the major.
Step 2 - Submit an Application
You are welcome to apply at anytime, however, we encourage you to take the LAES 301 introductory course (PDF), which is one great way to see if the program suits you. Students don't have to be enrolled in the program to take this class; you can take it and then decide if you want to apply to the program. If you do wish to apply, simply print the application (.doc), fill it out and return it to the Program Assistant. (This form can be printed and filled out or filled out and sent electronically. If you need assistance, please contact the Program Assistant). The application and academic history will be reviewed and a response letter will be sent.
During this stage, we also encourage you to contact the Program Directors to discuss in detail how to tailor the program to your academic and personal interests, and to answer questions. Remember, this program is geared to be flexible, by allowing freedom to create a direction best suited to your talents.
Step 3 - Wait for Acceptance Letter
Once the application has been reviewed by the Program Directors, a letter, tailored to your specific academic situation will be sent. This letter will fall into one of two categories:
- Full Acceptance - Students have met all entrance criteria and are instructed to begin the paperwork to officially transfer into the LAES Program and begin LAES coursework.
- Eligible to Reapply - Students have not met all of the entrance criteria and are provided specific advice as to what the student needs to do in order to meet entrance criteria.
It is important that you read this letter in it's entirety and follow the suggested instructions. Regardless of which type of letter received, you are always welcome to register for the LAES 301 introductory course (PDF) and participate in LAES projects and events.
Step 4 - Begin the Transfer Paperwork
To begin the transfer process:
- Fill out and sign the Major Change Request form or Add Major Request form (these forms can be obtained either from the LAES Program Assistant or from the Office of the Registrar);
- Bring the form to the LAES Program Assistant;
- LAES will request approval signature from your present major. (CENG students will be contacted to schedule a meeting with an Engineering Advisor before approval will be granted);
- The Program Assistant will obtain the final approval signatures and track the request through Academic Records. Once the change is complete, you will receive notice that your Poly Profile shows LAES as your official major.
- Congratulations and welcome to LAES!
