Ocean Site Fall 2022

A group of four LAES students had the opportunity to work on a project called Ocean Site focused on the decommissioning process of California’s offshore oil rigs in order to create a display for the general public to learn more about artificial reefs and the ecosystems they support.

They recently utilized the LAES travel grant to take a trip down to Orange County for a field trip and were also able to go out on a boat with Blue Latitudes. Blue Latitudes is a marine environmental consulting firm led by Emily Hazelwood and Amber Sparks. Blue Latitudes work includes re-purposing offshore infrastructure, utilizing routing ROV maintenance surveys, developing biological baselines, and analyze fisheries activity around offshore infrastructure. The purpose of the trip was to film 360° footage of the oil rig jackets to show people the life underneath oil rigs. We traveled with Blue Latitudes to interview the divers and obtain the footage that they shot.
